About the concept

Wat is the concept behind Slow Cabins®?

Slow Cabins aims to create a positive impact on people and planet. We do this by organising unique nature experiences, raising off-grid awareness and regenerative nature building in Europe.

Slow Cabins are ecological cabins (30-40 m²) that are completely self-sufficient in terms of water and electricity. They are located in magical locations in the great outdoors, where you can slow down and disconnect from everyday stress.

The cabins are spread over several regions in Flanders and Ireland at a driving distance of less than two hours from major cities. Fourteen days before your stay, we will send you a brochure with the exact location of your stay. Let go, surrender and trust the process. That’s what it’s all about.

That’s why it’s difficult to give an exact number.

Staying in the middle of nature, how is that possible?

Respect for people and planet lies at the heart of Slow Cabins. Not only does nature do wonders for our resilience, it also allows us to really unwind. We pick unique locations with an ultimate feeling of nature. However, our ecological design cabins are never located in nature reserves. They are secluded in hidden, non-vulnerable nature a stone’s throw from various cycling and walking routes.

Based on the vision of doing things differently and better, Slow Cabins actively reinvests in the reconstruction and preservation of local nature. In this way, Slow Cabins and its guests together create a net green added value where more guests means more nature, instead of the other way around.

It’s about more than just “a tree for every booking”. In consultation with local stakeholders, we look at what type of planting is most suitable, such as hedges or trees of life that absorb nitrogen. Biodiversity restoration is therefore an integral part of our business.

Slow Cabins are completely self-sufficient. That means that your hot water, electricity and heating comes 100% from nature. The ten high-tech solar panels generate energy that is stored in the latest home batteries.

In addition, each cabin has a water tank that collects 1,500 litres of rainwater. The water is then cleaned through three filters so you can shower and cook safely. Afterwards, a natural helophyte bed ensures that the waste water can be returned to the ground clean and safe. This keeps the impact on nearby nature to a minimum.

Is there warm water and electricity in a Slow Cabin?

Can I purchase a Slow Cabin?

We completely design and build our Slow Cabins ourselves. Currently, we do not sell cabins for private use.

To prepare the cabin for your next stay, we ask you to check out by 11am at the latest. You can opt for a late check-out (1pm on weekdays) when booking.

About your stay

How do I get to a Slow Cabin?

Our cabins are less than a two hours drive from major cities in Belgium and Ireland. Some locations are also easily accessible by bicycle or public transport.

If you come by public transport, we recommend choosing one of our cabins in Haspengouw, Hageland or Noorderkempen. These locations are the easiest to reach by public transport. Please mention when booking that you are coming by public transport (in the ‘comments’ field), so we can assign you the best accessible cabin.

Fourteen days before arrival, you will receive by e-mail the exact location of your Slow Cabin experience and the easiest way to get there. You will also find a list of local (sustainable) partners where you can go shopping, buy meals or go out to eat.

Is it possible to park near the cabin?

We provide secure parking within walking distance of the cabin. You will find the exact location of the car park and the walking route to the cabin in the brochure that we send you by e-mail two weeks before your stay.

Out of respect for nature, it is not allowed to drive your car to the cabin.

How and when can I check-in and check-out?

Check-in happens completely independent. You will find the cabin key in a key box with a unique code. All information regarding check-in and check-out can be found in the brochure you will receive by e-mail two weeks before arrival.

Check-in is possible from 4 pm onwards.
Check-out is no later than 11 am, unless you booked a late check-out when booking (1 pm on weekdays).

Would you like to book a late check-out for your stay? Contact us and we will get back to you shortly.

Can I bring my pet?

In each region, we have a couple of cabins where pets are allowed. Make sure to select that you are bringing your pet when booking your stay.

For hygienic reasons and possible allergies of guests, we also have specific cabins where pets are not allowed so that everyone can safely enjoy a Slow Cabins stay.

How are the cabins equipped and what should I bring?

Slow Cabins are ecological design cabins (30-40 m²) where you will find everything you need and nothing you do not.

Each Slow Cabin is equipped with a 160×200 cm queen-sized bed (including bed linen), a shower with hot water, a dry toilet, a wood-burning stove in the living room, an equipped kitchen with a fridge and a cooker with two gas fires, crockery, cooking utensils, a wood barbecue (outside) with grill and outdoor seating. Everything is provided to light the fire and barbecue.

Furthermore, basic ingredients and provisions such as olive oil, salt and pepper, coffee, tea, soap and towels are all provided.

We further provide everything you need and nothing you don’t. So you enjoy a carefree and unforgettable stay close to yourself and nature.

Bring as little luggage as possible to the cabin. The less you bring, the more rest you will find.

The essentials are:

  • toothbrush & toothpaste
  • walking shoes or boots
  • raincoat for rainy days
  • torch or enough battery for the torch on your phone
  • a good book, fun board games or a pack of cards
  • food & drink (we provide 5L of drinking water)

The paths leading to your cabin are in the middle of nature and are not equipped for luggage on wheels.

How does a dry toilet work?

A dry toilet is very sustainable. It looks like a normal toilet, but without water or any chemicals. Faeces and urine are collected separately in the toilet, avoiding unpleasant odours. Per flush you save of 6 to 9L of water.

The full explanation can be found in the manual located inside the cabin.

Should I bring my own food?

In the brochure, which you will receive fourteen days before your arrival, you will find a list of local (sustainable) partners where you can go for shopping, buying meals or going out to restaurants.

In some cases, it is possible to book a breakfast for your stay that will be delivered directly to the cabin.

Due to the logistical complexity of Slow Cabins, it is not yet possible to book hot meals today. In the cabin you will find all basic ingredients and kitchen utensils to prepare a tasty meal. There is also a wood barbecue outside.

It is entirely up to you whether you bring your own food, buy something locally in the local shops or go out for a meal in the neighbourhood.

Do you provide drinking water?

We provide 5L of drinking water per two-night stay.

Are there any activities in and around a Slow Cabin?

In each cabin, we provide a couple of reading books and fun card games. Two weeks before your stay, we will send you a short guide with the best addresses and all kinds of surprising slow experiences near your Slow Cabin. You will also find various walking or cycling routes and brochures in the cabin itself.

Are the cabins safe?

We value safety very highly. The cabins are located away from the busy world, but always in a safe and accessible place in nature. You can lock your cabin safely, both from the inside and outside.

In the manual, located in the cabin, you will find phone numbers and addresses of Slow Cabins, local emergency services and authorities. A first-aid kit, tick pliers and insect repellent are also available. The cabins are equipped with high-tech smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher for emergencies.

In an emergency, it is best to contact the emergency number 112.
For other questions, you can reach us 24/7 via the phone number mentioned in the manual.
